“I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” I Have A Dream” Speech, Lincoln Memorial, August, 1963

new grassroots movement is taking root, with the goal to embrace the dream of equality so eloquently voiced by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1963. It is called ServeaDream. The vision is to rekindle the pie social, the gathering of friends, and neighbors to share a piece of pie – Dream Pie. ServeaDream is planting the seeds for a new culinary tradition to celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Dr. King’s message of equality teaches that the “pie” can be shared by all. Baked in a round pan, this age-old comfort food is filled with a diversity of ingredients that deliciously symbolizes the Whole. ServeaDream embraces service and fellowship as key pathways to affect positive social change and applauds President Barak Obama’s remarks made at the Lincoln Memorial in January, 2009, reminding us that we need to be able to “recognize ourselves.in each other.

Why Dream Pie?

ServeaDream recognizes that the pulse of a culture can be measured by the health of our holiday traditions. Each yearly ritual reminds us of who we are, where we came from, and what matters most. We enact its meaning by telling stories, sharing fellowship, dancing, singing, decorating our homes, and making special foods that embody the spirit of the celebration. Many ingredients, steeped in tradition blend together over time to establish favorite holiday foods, passed down from generation to generation, providing nourishment, communion, and sparkle!

Sweet Home Dream Pie Social,
January 2009

Every January, as the King Holiday approaches, let’s invite neighbors - near and far- to gather around the community table to share stories while enjoying a piece of pie. All pies served for this occasion become Dream Pies and the celebration is a Dream Pie Social. Every January, during the coldest, darkest time of year, we can anticipate the aroma of delicious pies baking in the oven. Dream Pie Socials can be hosted at home, at work, in community centers, churches, schools, shelters, and parks. In addition to fellowship, suggested ingredients can include pie auction fundraisers, talent contests for best Dream Pie, best Sugar Free(dom) Pie, best Grassroots Pie, Dream speeches, spoken word performances, Dream songs, Pie songs, dances, artwork, and more of your own making!

Visit www.serveadream.org to check the community calendar, find community partners, and download the menu for Hosting a Dream Pie Social in your neighborhood.
