Cherries

Gouache on 300lb Arches paper
2018–present

Tell them, dear, that if eyes were made for seeing,
then Beauty is its own excuse for being
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

This series of color interaction exercises was inspired by a cherry tree that grew in my Ohio backyard. Every summer it produced a bountiful crop of fruit that was quickly transformed into jam, jelly, and cherry pie. In the paintings, the vibrant red, branch brown, and leaf green colors remain constant as the time of day changes behind them.
